The Incident at Hudaibiah

In the month of Zulkaedah during the sixth year of Hijrah Prophet Muhammad Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam had left Madinah with many Muslims to perform Hajj in Mekah.

When the Musyrikin Quraishy people knew of it, they made preparations to stop the Muslims from entering Mekah.

Before entering Mekah, Prophet Muhammad and the Muslims decided to set up camp in a place called Hudaibiah, north of Mekah.

The Musyrikins sent a group to meet with Prophet Muhammad and warned that if the Muslims enter Mekah there will be war.

Prophet Muhammad then sent Saidina Osman to explain to them that the only reason they wanted to enter Mekah is to perform the Hajj. Unfortunately, they captured Saidina Osman and said that he was killed. Upon hearing the news, Prophet Muhammad ordered all the Muslims to don the ihram and enter Mekah.

The Muslims made a pledge of allegiance or Bai’at with Prophet Muhammad that in the event of a battle they will not retreat. The pledge was named “Bai’at Ar-redhuan” which means with Allah’s blessings. It was also named “Bai’at As-Syajarah” as the pledge was made under a tree.

When the Musyrikins heard that the Muslims were coming and were ready for war, they turned scared and released Saidina Osman.

At the same time they made a peace offering and it was named the Hudaibiah Agreement. Prophet Muhammad accepted the agreement.

Eventually the Muslims took off their ihram after slaughtering a goat as they were prevented from performing Haj. They then made their way back to Madinah.

On the journey back, Allah Subhanahu Wata’ala sent Surah Al-Fatihah, which explained that it would not be long before Muslims will be able to enter and take over Mekah.
