A story of slander (Accusations against the Prophet’s Wife)
There were times when the Prophet would bring a wife to accompany him during a battle. Normally the Prophet would pick a name and that would decide who would go. During the Battle of Bani Al-Mustaliq, Siti Aisyah accompanied the Prophet.
On the journey back after the battle, the Muslims had stopped to rest and answer the call of nature. Siti Aisyah had gone too with the knowledge of her camel attendant. When she came back, she realized she had lost her necklace and went out looking for it. This time the attendant had not realized she had gone. So when all the Muslims left, so did her camel and attendant. When Siti Aisyah came back, she realized they had gone too far, and so she just sat down.
After a while a man named Safuan came by. He was given the duty to follow behind just in case anything was left behind. He was surprised to see Siti Aisyah and asked her to follow him back on his camel while he walked behind.
Upon arriving in Madinah, Prophet Muhammad was shocked to learn that Siti Aisyah was left behind. She then arrived back with Safuan.
The Munafiqs then started to spread rumours to slander Siti Aisyah and embarrass Prophet Muhammad. The Prophet himself was not too sure until Allah Subhanahu Wata’ala sent the verses 11- 14 of Surah An-Nur.
The verses explained the innocence of Siti Aisyah. The people who slandered Siti Aisyah were flogged 100 times.
That is the punishment for those who spread lies or slander others.
