At-Tayammum

Tayammum is to hit both hands on soil then wipe over face and hands.

Tayammum is obligatory for the following people:

  • Those who do not have any water at all.
  • Those who are sickly and cannot use water.
  • Those who have water that is only enough for drinking or cooking.
  • Those whose certain body parts are bandaged.

Rules for performing tayammum

  • If one does not have any water, he can only perform tayammum if he searched for water when it is time for prayers.
  • Perform tayammum only when the time for prayers sets in.
  • The soil used for tayammum must be pure.
  • One tayammum may only be performed for one fardhu prayer.

Methods for performing tayammum

Firstly, tap both hands together on the soil and recite intention to tayammum or niat:

نَوَيْتُ التَّيَمُّمَ لاِسْتِبَاحَةِ فَرْضِ الصَّلاةِ

Verily I intend to perform tayammum for prayers

Wipe your face with the palms of both hands. Then tap the soil again. With four fingers of your left hand wipe the back of your right palm all the way to the elbow. Then with your left palm wipe your inner right arm from your elbow to the wrist. Next, wipe the back of your left palm to the elbow with four fingers of the right hand. Use your right palm to wipe the inner left hand from the elbow till the wrist. After that wipe your left thumb over your right, and your right thumb over your left thumb.

🔊 Ask your ustaz or ustazah to recite the Arabic with you.
