Al-Istinja’

Istinja’ means cleaning the private parts after passing out urine and stool.

Istinja’ is obligatory or wajib and is to be done with water or other things that can rid of the impurities such as stones or paper.

There are rules for performing istinja’ with something other than water:

• Use at least 3 pieces of paper or 3 stones.
• The paper and stones must be clean
• It is not allowed to use items that are respected such as paper with Quranic verses or food that has gone stale.
• May istinja’ with items other than water as long as the najis on anterior or posterior private parts have not dried, otherwise water must be used.
• May istinja’ with items other than water as long as the impurities do not drip elsewhere.
• Najis is not splattered elsewhere.
