Types of water
The seven types of water are further divided into four more categories:
- Water that is clean and be used for purification and not “makruh” to use such as the seven types mentioned earlier.
- Water that is clean and can be used for purification but “makruh”. For instance water that has been in the sun too long and therefore hot. This type of water is called “musyammas”. However if the water cools, then it is no longer considered makruh.
- Water that is clean, but cannot be used for purification because it had already been used by others for taking the wudhu’ and hadas bathing and the water is less than 2 qullahs.
- Mutanajis water is water that has already been contaminated by najis. It cannot be used if the amount of water is small. However if the water is more than 2 qullahs and has not changed colour, smell or taste it can be used for purification. 2 qullahs amount to roughly 62.5kg. Or water that fills up a square container measuring 65cm wide, 65cm height and 65cm depth.
