Purification
The meaning of Taharah is purification.
It means cleanliness from najis and hadath.
Hadath is impurities that cannot be seen such as passing gas.
Najis is impurities that can be seen like urine and faeces.
To be clean from hadas and najis, we must use water that is pure and clean.
These are the seven types of water that we are allowed to use for purification:
- Sea water
- River water
- Well Water
- Spring water
- Rain water
- Water from melted ice
- Dew
The types of water above are known as ‘mutlak’ water.
We are able to use it as long as it does not discolour, emit a smell or taste different.
If the water has been changed by adding substances like coffee, syrup or soap, it is no longer “mutlak” and no longer able to be used to clean hadath and najis.
