Haji Alwida’ and the passing of Rasulullah
On the tenth year of Hijrah, Prophet Muhammad Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam departed to Mekah to perform the Hajj. He was accompanied by many Muslims.
The Hajj was named “Hajjatul Wida” which meant the Departing Hajj. This was because Prophet Muhammad had given his last speech to 100,000 Muslims.
In his speech, Prophet Muhammad advised the Muslims to be united and not cause any factions among the people. Muslims are prohibited from killing, snatching possessions or belittling and embarrassing relatives. Muslims were also advised to always believe in the Al-Quran and Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam. During this period the closing verse of Hukum Al-Quran was sent. It was the third verse of Surah Al-Maedah:
Meaning: This day have I perfected for you your religion and completed My favor on you and chosen for you Islam as a religion.
After completing his Hajj, Prophet Muhammad went home to Madinah. During the end of Safar, on the eleventh year of Hijrah the Prophet began to feel unwell.
On Monday the 13th of Rabiul Awal the same year Prophet Muhammad Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam passed away. He was 63 years old.
The jenazah was buried in Masjid An-Nabawi.
